1 ounce American Eagle Gold Coin

First issued in 1849, the 1-ounce ‘American Eagle’ gold coins are among the finest gold coins.

The obverse of the coin depicts the Statue of Liberty, as designed by the American sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907, facing the obverse of the coin, her hair flowing in her wake and holding a torch, as if she were stepping towards the obverse of the coin. In her right hand, Lady Liberty inspires and guides others along the path to freedom. In her other hand, she holds an olive branch, often a symbol of peace. The combination of these two elements reveals the power and grandeur of the Statue of Liberty. Behind her, the US Capitol can be seen, with flames appearing to rise from it. Next to her left foot (at the bottom right when looking at the coin) is the coin’s year of issue, in this case 2023. In addition to the year of issue, the word ‘Freedom’ is engraved beneath the main figure’s head. Finally, fifty stars, the national emblem of the United States, are arranged around the edge of the coin.

The reverse of the coin features a new design created in 2021 by the American designer Jennie Norris. It depicts a portrait of the bald eagle, the national symbol of the United States. The eagle is shown in profile, highlighting the details of its plumage and its determined gaze. A sense of pride seems to emanate from it. Several inscriptions appear on the reverse of the coin. Firstly, the words ‘United States of America’, ‘$50’ and ‘1 ounce of pure gold’ are positioned above and all around the coin. Next, above the eagle’s head, is the Latin motto ‘e pluribus unum’, which literally means ‘out of many, one’, as well as ‘In God We Trust’, the official national motto since 1956. The letters ‘JN’ and ‘RG’ flanking the eagle stand for the initials of the designer, Jennie Norris, and the engraver, Renata Gordon, respectively.
