The ‘half-sovereign’ gold coin was introduced in 1544, during the reign of Henry VIII. Following a major reform of the British currency, the production of the half-sovereign and the sovereign was suspended from 1604 to 1817. Production continued until 1926, and the coin was widely used in Australia until 1933.
The half-sovereign weighs exactly half as much as the sovereign. Depicting the same scene, it features the same engravings.
On the obverse: depending on the coin, the bare head of Charles III or Queen Elizabeth II is depicted, depending on the year of issue.
On the reverse: Saint George is depicted on horseback, slaying a mythical dragon.
The half-sovereign is a gold coin that represents a safe investment; it is an attractive and tangible investment thanks to its affordable price, which makes it easy to resell.
